    THE GROWING AQUACULTURE CENTRE

    - ASIA

The world's largest aquaculture countries are found in Asia: China (1), India (2), Vietnam (3), Thailand (4), Indonesia (5), Bangladesh (6) and Japan (7). Chile comes in at number 8 on the ranking list, and is the first country outside Asia on the list. (FAO, 2007)

    Vietnam

The Fish Innovation Centre has long history of operations in Vietnam. The first aquaculture studies were done in Thailand, only to later turn to Vietnam's mountain regions, where the cold water and regional development were found more suitable as the set for in-depth feasibility studies on the opportunities for rainbow trout culture.

Introduction of Rainbow Trout Culture in Northern Vietnam – Establishment of Pilot Farm, 2003-2008 (MFA-Finland, RIA-1 institute, Vietnam)

The first rainbow trout farm established in Sa Pa in Lao Cai Province serves today as the Centre of Cold Water Aquaculture of Vietnam. It provides the private trout industry with extension services, certified, health guaranteed fingerlings and balanced feed from Finland. The pilot farm has supported the emerge of 25 private companies in Northern Provinces and Central Plateau of Vietnam. High-qualified, value-added trout products are mainly marketed in restaurants in Hanoi, Da Lat, HCM and other large cities.

Capacity building for the development of Cold Water fish farming in Vietnam, 2010-2013 (MFA- Finland, RIA-1 Institute, Finnish Game and Fisheries Research Institute)

FIC Ltd. has submitted Finish Game and Fisheries Research Institute at the titled ICI programme services in two specific tasks, Market survey of Rainbow trout culture, Vietnam, and Quality and Food Safety Management in the rainbow trout production, Vietnam.

Feasibility study: Selective breeding and post-harvest processing technologies to enhance added values and Food safety of Tra fish (pangasius) culture in Can Tho, Vietnam (IPP Programme, MFA-Finland, 2011)

FIC Ltd, Finnish Game and Fisheries Research Institute concluded the titled study to support the Tra fish R&D strategy of Binh An Fisheries Research Institute. Selected issues of the plan will be designed further together with Finland- Vietnam Innovation Partnership Programme

    INDIA

FIC Ltd. has prepared with Kuopio Innovation and through Expertise Clusters of Cleantech and Food development a project Finnish Cleantech and Food safety solutions to develop sustainable shrimp industry in India (OSKE Programme 2010-2011). The  Finnish know-how and technologies are applied in mitigating environmental load and food safety risks. Attempts are undertaken towards product labelling and certification (Aqua Safe Shrimp) and R&D is initiated in developing processing side-streams in valuable products for pharmacy, medical and food industry.

    CHINA

China's strong economic growth has led to an increment in the consumption of fish and also an increased demand for variety. China has strong traditions, thousands of years old, in fish farming but these have been limited to warm water species like tilapia and carp.

In the north-east of China, the region of Harbin holds the location of a government-owned  farm, where cold water species such as rainbow trout are cultured. This institution has partnered with the Finnish aquaculture sector.

Cold water species have also been cultured in other mountain areas. The Fish Innovation Centre has strong ties to the north-west of China where the conditions have been perfect for production of cold water species for the Chinese market that demands good quality products. Collaboration has created a demand for Finnish cold water aquaculture experts and good quality, clean, Finnish processed fish products.

Shanghai is the centre of growth and production in China. Over a quarter of the Chinese GDP is  produced in the Jangtse-delta region.   In collaboration with Kuopio Innovation, Shanghai Ocean University and Shanghai FDA, FIC Ltd. has been promoting exchange of Finnish Food safety expertise with aquaculture and fish industry of China.
