    HI-TECH AQUACULTURE

Finland is reknown globally as a hi-tech country. Know-how in the culture of fresh and cold water species, combined with Finnish aquaculture technology and commercial know-how, is easily applied elsewhere where the intensity of aquaculture is on the increase. China highly values hi-tech solutions at a time when the value of farmed fish in on the rise, while fish catches are decreasing. In Vietnam, commercial fish farming is developing at the word's fastest rate. In Africa, on the other hand, the most significant issue in the fisheries sector, is to secure sufficient nutrition for the communities, while in South America, the sustainable use of natural resources is of the utmost importance. Sustainable and modern fisheries management offers a good path for development.

    InstitutionaL DEVELOPMENT

At the Fish Innovation Centre co-operation between institutes is enhanced using partnership agreements. Applied research, expert exchange and common projects all help to support the parteners' ability to develop their own countries' industries. In this connection, the Finnish Game and Fisheries Research Institute and Finnish universities are a significant resource. The Fish Innovation Centre offers, through its projects, a model where administration, research and commerce work together, in the same direction, to develop the growing fisheries and aquaculture sector.

    SUPPORT FOR SMEs

Present day development co-operation in the EU, Vietnam or in the Amazon, revolves around supporting small and middle-sized enterprises (SMEs). The problems faced and their solutions are surprisingly similar: entrepreneurs work on a small-scale, they are lonely, there is a lack of infrastructure and services are priced very highly and globalization has led to increased competition. Regional development through SMEs signifies a need for support to institutes that realize the services to the SMEs.  In addition, fast and direct contacts between companies is also needed. It is in this way, that the rainbow trout farm was built in the Lao Cai mountains in Vietnam also resulting in the creation of a large network between Finnish and Vietnamese companies. As a result of the project, production at the farm has multiplied.
