VALUE-ADDED to FINNISH AQUACuLTURE
The Finnish aquaculture sector has been developed through a number of projects. Some of these are described below:
VesanTO IQF-LINE
The municipalities of the Inner-Savo region (Tervo, Vesanto, Rautalampi, Karttula and Suonenjoki) are located to the west and south-west of Kuopio. Here, we also find Pielavesi and Kiuruvesi, that belong to the region of Upper-Savo. The fishermen in these regions are extremely active and ready to develop their sector and way of life. A survey carried out in the period 2004-2005, suggested that one of the major milestones of the area is the fishermen's small market share which results in low profitability, low sales prices and irregularities in ensuring deliveries. The Fish Innovation Centre explored different solutions to boosting the fishermen's operations and profitability issues, which led to the building and installation of an IQF-line for the Vesanto Fishermen's Co-operative Association.
LakeFISH BrAND
This project addresses problems such as the low appreciation of fish from Finland's internal waters, low interest in local fishing and underdevelopment of the local aquaculture and fishing sector. The project aims to decipher the qualities of fish from internal water bodies, that can result in value-added products as well as create a value-added chain that in turn increases the value and consumption rates of lakefish. Demand creates the need to fish and increases delivery assurances.
PIKEPErCH CULTURE
Finnish aquaculture needs new fish species to ensure quality raw material. Sea catches for pikeperch have fallen and the recuperation of pikeperch in internal waters has not yet been able to meet the growing demand for white fish. Pikeperch is imported to Europe from the Far-East, but Finnish pikeperch also has its own value. The biggest challenge faced in pikeperch culture is in the feeding of small fry.
GRAYLING CULTURE
Grayling is, like rainbow trout, a spring spawner and a salmonid whose stocks have been depleted. Grayling has long been a favorite among leisure-time fishermen. Culture of grayling in Finland has been limited to stocking purposes. The Fish Innovation Centre has, together with the University of Kuopio, advanced grayling culture by creating a guide for grayling culture in natural food ponds. The value-adding attributes of grayling have also been mapped out in 2007-2008.
